An Adventurous Summer Internship
An Adventurous Summer Internship

My name is Mariam Bekauri. I am a third-year student at Tbilisi Medical Academy. I want to tell you briefly about my interesting summer.

This summer, as part of the Tbilisi Medical Academy summer internship, I had an amazing opportunity to do an internship at Klaipeda University Hospital in Lithuania and develop my medical skills as a future doctor. Within the framework of this project, I met many experienced doctors who are masters of their work. There were also students from other courses, which made the internship particularly interesting and memorable.

During my internship, I was lucky to have a great professor who later became my mentor. He taught me a lot, especially about endocrine disorders. I tried my best to learn as much as possible from him to use this knowledge in my future practice. I spent this wonderful and adventurous summer in the Department of Endocrinology, seeing many interesting patients. I encountered several rare diseases, including those whose diagnoses I had only read about in textbooks. One of the most interesting things I saw was a patient with Addison's disease. I would also like to mention that thanks to my professor, I even had an ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland. I admit, that putting theory into practice was really amazing and exciting.

Although I spent most of my time in the endocrinology department, I also attended operations in other fields of medicine. Whipple's surgery turned out to be the most difficult, long, and memorable of these operations. The operating environment was completely foreign to me, as this was the first time I had had the opportunity to attend operations before my summer internship. To be honest, many things excited me, including the fact that the doctors were listening to rock music during the surgery as if this music created a calmer and more focused atmosphere. Despite the amazing environment, the professionalism and warm attitude of the doctors helped me communicate with them and learn several important skills.

We spent our free time exploring the city, learning about foreign cultures, and playing volleyball on the

beach. We also had the opportunity to enjoy the sunset, which was really beautiful against the background of the Baltic Sea. We often went by yacht to other seaside towns and enjoyed the beauty of Lithuania, the quiet and calm environment. We also visited Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, located in the middle of Europe, whose history dates back to the Neolithic Age. We spent a few days in Latvia and visited Riga. We were impressed by the sights, history, culture, and architecture of the city. We also visited several museums which added interesting history to our trip.

I think this internship gave me the opportunity to see medicine from a different angle and to take another step forward in my personal development. This summer turned out to be very fruitful and memorable for me, because I met many interesting people, created many new memories and gained great experience. I must mention that this project has motivated me to learn more and become an excellent doctor. I believe that this internship will always be special in my adventurous path as a doctor.
