European Memories from Klaipeda
European Memories from Klaipeda

A month in Klaipeda felt just like something out of a TV series, mixing interesting experiences with local culture.

I’m Saba Zakradze, a third-year student at TMA, and my one-month internship at Klaipeda University Hospital was an unforgettable experience.

My time in the trauma and orthopedic departments provided me with extensive knowledge and experience in advanced surgical techniques and hospital practices. The most fascinating aspect was robotic surgery, which is not yet widespread in Georgia. Additionally, I had the opportunity to experience life in Klaipeda as a European city and engage in various cultural and recreational activities.

From the moment I arrived in Klaipeda, I was impressed by the well-structured and efficient clinic system. The hospital I visited daily, where I attended numerous operations, was equipped with modern technology, and the medical staff was highly qualified and professional. I had the opportunity to learn about trauma surgery and orthopedics—two dynamic and critical fields for treating injuries and musculoskeletal conditions.

The operations I participated in ranged from routine fracture repairs to more complex orthopedic procedures, such as joint reconstruction and limb amputation. Each operation presented a unique challenge, and I was consistently amazed by the precision and teamwork demonstrated by the surgeons. They were not only technically skilled but also empathetic, emphasizing patient care and outcomes at every stage. Working alongside them allowed me to learn about various approaches to surgical care and post-operative recovery, broadening my understanding of trauma and orthopedic surgery.

One of the highlights of my stay in Klaipeda was my participation in robotic surgery. Robot-assisted surgeries are still relatively rare in Georgia, so watching and engaging in these procedures was particularly fascinating. The precision of robotic systems is remarkable, clearly enhancing outcomes by reducing the invasiveness of procedures and shortening recovery times. Each movement of the robot, guided by the surgeon’s hands, was inspiring, as such experiences are not common. My participation in these operations convinced me that the knowledge gained there should be introduced in our country to align more closely with highly qualified European treatment methods. Incorporating robotic surgery into more hospitals globally, including those in Georgia, will significantly improve patient care and surgical success rates. Seeing how advanced technology can be seamlessly integrated into the operating room was inspiring.

Outside of the hospital, my experience in Klaipeda was just as enriching as my time in the clinic. The city is a hidden gem on the Baltic Sea, featuring a captivating blend of historic architecture and modern amenities. In my free time, I explored many parks and enjoyed visiting various cafes. This internship allowed me to experience not only working in a European clinic but also living in a beautiful seaside town for an extended period.

The peaceful atmosphere and friendly people made my stay even more enjoyable. My time in Klaipeda was not only a professional milestone but also a personal adventure. The balance between working hard at the hospital and immersing myself in a new culture made this trip truly special. This month-long stay reinforced the importance of gaining new experiences and implementing them, especially in the medical field. I created many memories and had countless adventures in Klaipeda, and I left with valuable experience, newfound knowledge, lasting friendships, and the unique experience of living in a student dormitory with my colleagues.
