Beyond Borders
Beyond Borders: How an Exchange Program Shaped My Academic and Personal Growth
My name is Lizi Mokvanidze, and I am a fourth-year student at Tbilisi Medical Academy (TMA). I had the incredible privilege of participating in the bilateral exchange program at Vilnius University, one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in Eastern Europe. Living in Vilnius—a calm, safe, and charming city—for five months was an experience that exceeded all my expectations.
As a student researcher, I was fortunate to join a research club led by dedicated professors, and I look forward to continuing these projects from my home university. Additionally, observing Lithuania's healthcare system offered fresh perspectives and valuable insights into international medical practices. Conversations with international friends about their countries' healthcare challenges and innovations further enriched my understanding. Beyond academics, living in Vilnius was a delightful adventure.
The city’s blend of historical landmarks, like Gediminas Tower and the Vilnius Cathedral, with modern vibrancy created an unforgettable atmosphere. Experiencing Lithuanian culture, including traditional cuisine and the festive preparations for Christmas and New Year’s, added to the magic of my stay. One of the highlights of my exchange experience was meeting international students and other exchange program students from different countries and backgrounds. Their unique perspectives and experiences added so much value to our shared journey.
We connected not only through our academic pursuits but also through exploring Vilnius together, learning about each other's cultures, and supporting one another during challenges. These connections have created a network of peers I hope to stay in touch with, both as friends and as future colleagues in medicine. I truly believe leaving our comfort zone is what pushes us to grow as people.
This exchange program was no exception. While navigating through a new country, with no familiar faces and support system, I learned resilience, adaptability, and the value of open-mindedness. My time in Vilnius was transformative. I am immensely grateful to both Tbilisi Medical Academy and Vilnius University for this opportunity. I encourage every student to explore similar programs and embrace the chance to learn and grow in a new environment.
