Synthesis of Medicine
Synthesis of Medicine
I am Tamar Kobulashvili, a fourth-year student at Petre Shotadze Tbilisi Medical Academy. In the summer of 2023, I had the great opportunity to visit Lodz, one of the most fascinating cities in Poland, on an exchange program for clinical experience.
This one-month summer program was part of my development not only from a professional but also from a personal point of view. It is difficult to imagine and convey the influence of the period spent in Lodz.
For the first time, we saw the streets of this city in the evening. Calm and quiet, causing interest and some kind of intrigue to what awaits you in the coming days. Every day spent in the clinic was just like that, seeing and discussing interesting cases. At 8 a.m., we met one of the outstanding doctors of the intensive Care Department, who became our curator and guide both in the institution and the city. The days spent in this department were interesting not only professionally but also ethically. First of all, you observe the doctor's acquaintance with his communication with others. Even though communication with intensive patients in most cases is impossible due to their health condition, during our rotation Mr. Andrey still managed and showed us an outstanding pattern of relations with the doctor-patient. He was active in his daily life, along with his overcrowded medical practice, to emphasize the immense importance of ethics in the relationship between doctor and patient. His style of approach was interesting, as it was always aimed at maintaining a high quality of life for the patient. He often repeated the famous phrase that we treated diseases, not people. In terms of clinical experience, we had the opportunity to actively get acquainted with the management of acute patients and their management.
We also gained extraordinary experience in the Department of Surgery and Anesthesiology, where doctors allowed us to attend many interesting and rare procedures every day. Anesthesiologists allowed us to be involved in the preoperative preparation of the patient and participate directly during the operation. During this period, we visited several more departments, among them was Cardiology. The doctor provided us with interesting cases of patients and allowed us to attend interesting operations as well as standard, relatively noninvasive procedures.
Speaking about this interesting way, it is necessary to emphasize the local culture and architecture. During our stay in Poland, we had the opportunity to travel and visit different cities and get acquainted with their culture and customs. We got acquainted with interesting people and listened to Polish ballads and legends preserved in history. It was impossible to walk through these streets, get acquainted with this culture, and not understand the value and beauty of each person's life.
Such amazing synesthesia of Medicine and culture really left an indelible mark, on my personality as a future doctor.
