A Gynecological Odyssey

Labas! (Hello!) My name is Elene, I am TMA’s 5th-course student.

Becoming a doctor is like taking a long trip with lots of important stops along the way. One of the most exciting parts of my journey has been my month-long clinical clerkship at Klaipeda University Hospital's Gynecology and Endoscopial Gynecology Department. On July 29, 20 students from TMA traveled to Klaipeda, one of the most beautiful, old, and very interesting port cities of Lithuania, and from there our adventure in Lithuanian culture and the medical field began. The opportunity to observe gynecological procedures was one of the most exciting parts of my clerkship. The Endoscopic Gynecology Department was a center of innovation, with minimally invasive operations carried out with exceptional accuracy. Endoscopic procedures, such as laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, allowed us to visualize internal structures without the need for extensive incisions. While medical texts give a foundation, I discovered that the genuine art of surgery is taught via observation, practice, and mentorship.

One of the highlights of my clerkship was the privilege of learning from experienced mentors. These gynecologists shared not only their medical expertise but also their insights into patient-doctor dynamics and the art of delivering patient-centered care. Observing them navigate complex cases with a blend of professionalism and compassion left an indelible impression on my approach to medicine. Each patient's story was a kaleidoscope of experiences, and it was my privilege to listen to them.

My month in the Gynecology Department at Klaipeda University Hospital was not only a time of intense learning but also of personal and professional development. While the clinical clerkship was undoubtedly the best part of my month-long experience, life outside the hospital was unforgettable. Living in the dormitory and exploring the charming city of Klaipeda added a unique layer to my journey and allowed me to immerse myself in the local culture. The dormitory quickly became more than just a place to sleep; it became a hub of friendship and shared experiences. We found comfort in one other's company, exchanging experiences about difficult situations, discussing the latest developments in medicine, and offering support through difficult moments. We prepared and shared meals, discovered hidden gems in Klaipeda, and even took spontaneous weekend trips to the nearest destinations. These moments helped us grow as individuals, providing an opportunity to learn from each other's backgrounds and perspectives.

As I think of my time in Klaipeda, I am reminded that the path to becoming a doctor is more than just learning medical terminology and improving clinical abilities. This is a multifaceted journey, that encompasses empathy, communication, ethics, professionalism, teamwork, cultural sensitivity, research, innovation, and continual reflection. This journey requires dedication, ongoing learning, and a genuine commitment to the well-being of patients. It's a challenging but rewarding path. I aspire to engage in numerous additional projects, as they play a vital role in my growth as a medical professional. By doing so, I can equip myself with modern, globally established therapeutic and diagnostic approaches. This will ultimately empower me to contribute these advanced medical practices to our country as a future physician.
