The Beginning - "Doctor's House"
We hear different stories about nothing and everything. We often imagine ourselves as part of this history, adding and subtracting values. The reason we like stories is because of their sequential dynamicsโbeginnings, developments, and endings.
The hardest part is the beginning. It's as if it's so easy to choose, decide and take a full step forward. However, the most important question we have at the first step is, what is my beginning? With this question began the life of a student in the 1950s, which continued from forestry engineering to being presented as a hero doctor of Abkhazia. This was not as easy to obtain as it sounds. Going on from family to family in the inaccessible snowy areas of the mountains of Abkhazia and in the Kodori valley and saving a number of patients deserved this status, and you will probably agree, fully deserved.
Medicine was not his first choice until one day he found himself as a patient in the clinic. It was at this moment that he realized that he had made a wrong choice and it was time to change. In the same year, he passed the exams at the Medical Institute without acquaintances. Yes, acquaintances sound comical today, but back then it was incredible.
He still remembers the feeling when he read the didactic motives of Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani on the exam ticket. This was the beginning of his profession as a doctor. I don't know why, but I thought student life wasn't as colorful and fun as it is now, as black and white as the movies from the fifties. The contrast between the present and past reality is visible. If I lived in that time, I would miss that time, when they follow me with a sad voice and watery eyes. Emotions are always visible in the eyes. The deeper we go into the memories, the more sad happiness I feel in the look of my grandfather.
Memories are good, but life was not easy. The whole village was proud if a fellow villager went to study in the city. Arriving in Tbilisi was something unattainable, it was like going abroad. Studentship and the path to recovering patients began. The scholarship represented an important aspect of his life, if not for 60 Maneti, it would have been impossible to continue his studies. For this, you had to complete the matric (mark sheet at that time) with four marks, or if you had five marks it was even better. You could have been more self-righteous in front of your peers, he laughs.
People so often get lost in their ambitions that in the end, they are just a memory. In this case, ambition was accompanied by a goal, and the goal was accompanied by a desire for a successful future. Goals and opportunities that the Soviet period did not make very real. Today, we can contact the desired university or clinic anywhere in the world. However, imagine the 1960s-70s, when you cannot be alone with your thoughts because of the regime, and at the same time you want to get an education in a foreign country. Just when he was faced with the most difficult career decision and had to continue his postgraduate studies in Germany, Raikom (district committee) decided not to give the ambitious student to another country. He wanted to diversify Soviet Georgia with qualified personnel, and that's why he appointed my grandfather as a junior doctor in the Kodori Valley in Abkhazia. Thus began the first success towards a great goal. A small Finnish house, only with 34 beds, located next to the hospital, which over time was called "Doctor's House" and remained so.
Days followed nights, months followed years, from one patient to another. Bone damage of any severity he felt with his hands. When the first portable X-ray was used, the development world was at its zenith, thinking about how such a large machine could fit into a small box. (Photo 1). While talking, he often looks at his own hands, which have saved not one, but several hundreds of lives.
To tell the truth, it was not as easy to describe all this as I thought. Picking up hidden and forgotten stories from another person's mind, I felt both sadness and compassion. I sympathized with the fact that decisions were made instead of him, and with sadness, the cloud that I always saw in his eyes, but did not know the reason for, became clear. This is a short story of a person who dared, started, and took a step forward proudly. I think it's time for us to think, what is our beginning?
