"Students for Public Health" – At the initiative of Tbilisi Medical Academy’s (TMA) students, another hypertension screening campaign was held in the village of Shroma, Ozurgeti district. For two days, the local population was provided with free cardiological consultations and electrocardiograms. In total, about 60 patients were provided with services.
Together with the students of the Academy, the screening was conducted by TMA’s Associate Professor, Dr. Shorena Chumburidze, and TMA’s invited lecturer, Dr. Nino Chaghiashvili. During the screening process, the electrocardiogram of one of the patients showed signs of acute myocardial infarction. The patient was immediately taken to Ozurgeti for further analysis, such as the troponin test, after which he was transported to Tbilisi. Coronary angiography confirmed the narrowing (stenosis) of all three blood vessels of the heart, which requires bypass surgery. In the process of managing this case, Dr. Shorena Chumburidze showed exceptional professionalism and attention to detail and the patient’s needs.
A total of 6 TMA students participated in the screening campaign: Elene Gubeladze, Nana Katchiuri, Elene Liluashvili, Saba Zakradze, Elene Sioridze, and Mariam Jorbenadze. With the involvement of students and TMA academic staff, hypertension screening was also conducted in Gurjaani Municipality (Kakheti Region) within the framework of the project "Students for Public Health". The project aims to raise awareness of arterial hypertension in the community and provide access to medical education in order to reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases and life-threatening complications.
