A new exploratory study by researchers from Akkon University of Human Sciences’ Institute for Research in International Assistance (IRIA), Germany, and Petre Shotadze Tbilisi Medical Academy (TMA), Georgia, examined perceptions of health risks related to outdoor air pollution among adults living in Tbilisi, as well as their responses to those risks.

According to the results of a survey conducted in October 2025, there is considerable concern among residents regarding air pollution. However, the level of knowledge is moderate, while protective behavior remains limited. Almost eight out of ten respondents expressed personal concern about the effects of air pollution on their own health and that of their family members, while 68% reported a willingness to pay additional taxes to reduce air pollution in Tbilisi.

Differences were also observed across various population groups. Younger individuals and those with better financial status demonstrated greater knowledge about air pollution, whereas individuals with certain medical conditions were more likely to wear masks when air quality decreased. However, the results clearly indicate a gap between awareness and action, suggesting that awareness alone is not sufficient to ensure protective behavior.

The findings highlight that for future public health policies in Tbilisi to be effective, efforts must go beyond raising awareness. There is a need to better communicate and implement measures that translate awareness into action, while also aligning with broader public health goals.

The study was conducted by IRIA students Silvia Zanetti and Manizha Khakimova, in collaboration with TMA students Nana Katchiuri and Mariam Kevkhishvili, under the supervision of Prof. Maka Maglakelidze (TMA) and Prof. Gaby Feldmann (IRIA).
