Does the concurrence of medicine and art provide understanding of complex issues, such as medical professionalism?
To provide an answer to this question, in 2022, Petre Shotadze Tbilisi Medical Academy (TMA) delivered an innovative, extraordinary, and transdisciplinary photography project for students under the title “Six Days of Country Doctor”. Within the frames of the project, six students participated in an expedition, which took place in three locations in the Adjara highlands—Skhalta, Ghorjomi, and Khulo—where, during one week, they shadowed and documented on their cameras the everyday work of local village doctors. The unique touch of this initiative lies in the fact that future doctors could observe and shadow the work of village doctors from the side, highlight their roles, and reflect on the daily work process on film. The project, which echoes the institutional culture and mission of TMA, aims to raise public awareness of physicians working in the highlands of Georgia, and also to motivate young physicians to work in rural areas. During the first phase, students learned photography basics and completed a two-month preparatory course with the project author and leading photographer Leli Blagonravova, while also mastering visual storytelling and writing techniques.
At the final stage, an exhibition was held and a magazine was published compiling the students’ photos and collected stories.
TMA continues to cooperate with doctors participating in the project and has held several trainings with their participation.
The transdisciplinary project continued in 2023. As a result of the competition, six students were selected again and went through the preparatory stage with the project co-author, Leli Blagonravova. In the fall, the students spent a week in Guria—in different villages of Chokhatauri Municipality (Nabeglavi, Zemo Suribi, Amagleba, Kokhnari, Bukistsikhe, etc.)— documenting doctors’ daily life and work on film and making field notes.
The dissemination of the second season’s results is planned for spring.
Students for Children
Every Saturday, TMA students visit the social enterprise “Babale,” where they take part in various activities with beneficiary children, including art therapy.
Students for the Elderly
Our students often visit nursing homes and brighten residents’ days with various activities.
Pink October
TMA has been cooperating with Europa Donna Georgia for almost three years. Within this partnership, students participate in awareness-raising campaigns, drawing competitions, workshops, and art therapy.
GO GREEN Campaign
At the initiative of TMA’s Eco Club, in 2023 TMA launched the “GO GREEN” campaign, which promotes a green policy at TMA and the sharing of environmental information with international experts, clinicians, and students. The advocacy campaign also includes public outreach and close dialogue with patients, as well as the promotion of vegan and vegetarian foods. TMA actively cooperates with Vegan Georgia in this direction.
