An Equal Society Where Chromosomes Do Not Determine Relationships

An equal society where chromosomes do not determine relationships - this is the slogan that united TMA students and hosted teenagers with Down syndrome and Autism at the Academy.

As part of the visit, a public lecture was also held in the academy's exhibition space, led by Rusudan Mghebrishvili, Head of the Health and Social Department of the Georgian Down Syndrome Association and director of the Gigo Foundation.

The main topic of the conversation was raising public awareness and promoting inclusive education. “It is important to live in a society where equality and respect define our relationships, not chromosomes. Each person is unique in their way, and this diversity is what strengthens our society,” said Giorgi Geladze, one of the students of the TMA.

As part of the visit, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Petre Shotadze Tbilisi Medical Academy and the Georgian Down Syndrome Association, the aim of which is to strengthen cooperation between the Association and TMA, which, on the one hand, will help the students of the Academy to deepen their professional skills through volunteer activities, and on the other hand, strengthen the supportive environment for the beneficiaries of the Association. Moreover, the guests visited the TMA Clinical Skills Center and got acquainted with modern medical technologies on site.

Since 2021, TMA has been working closely with organizations that care for teenagers and adolescents with Down syndrome to strengthen their integration into society. TMA students are actively involved in this process. “When we teach and learn from each other, we create a strong state, where everyone will have a better opportunity for development. Relationships with the teenagers and adolescents that we met today teach us sincerity, warmth, and the simple happiness that we often do not notice daily. An inclusive, supportive, and humane society is our common future," said Giorgi Geladze, a student participating in the event.
