Project - “WM3R - Waste Management”
🗓️ 2025-04-07
“WM3R—Waste Management” is one of the student initiatives that won the competition for social and cultural student projects. The project's authors are Avtandil Samadalashvili and Medea Kusiani, who are actively implementing the activities defined by the project, which include meetings and workshops. The project aims to engage young people in environmental and sustainable development issues by raising awareness and promoting active participation.
At the students' initiative, a meeting has already been held with representatives of organizations operating in Georgia that work on environmental issues. Among them is CENN, which is one of the strongest environmental non-governmental organizations in the Caucasus region, and has been working with young people in the direction of sustainable development goals for many years. One of their directions is waste management. They know that "replacing two bottles with one, saves us a cap, this is a small thing, but ultimately it is a big step towards achieving the goal" - this is exactly the topic that the representative of the organization Elene Bedenashvili spoke about with the young people participating in the project.
The meeting also took place with representatives of the organization “Sadagi”, the Georgian guild of cleaners, which aims to clean up the country, protect its nature, and improve its health. The organization shows people that by uniting forces and ideas, it is possible to solve the problem that concerns each of us and the health of our families. The representative of the organization, Maia Mestumre, spoke about the practical part, the experience of the organization, and the scale that “Sadagi” covers every year.
In addition, within the framework of the project, students met with representatives of the organization “My City Kills”. At the meeting, the head of the organization, Giorgi Japaridze, spoke about air pollution and the elimination of problems in this regard. He also introduced the students to all the initiatives that the organization is implementing to solve the above-mentioned problem.
It is important that in the future, Tbilisi Medical Academy (TMA) will also be involved in the activities of the organization. Giorgi Japaridze will present the Academy with a device that determines the level of air pollution, this device itself is made from recycled plastic specifically for TMA.
Within the framework of the project, a meeting was also held with representatives of social enterprises “Tene” and “Plastic Watcher”, these enterprises have been creating many interesting and useful things by recycling plastic waste for years.
Sandro Liluashvili, the head of the organization “Tene” and Eka Asatiani, a representative of the social enterprise “Plastic Watcher”, shared information with the participants about the ways and methods that they use to give new life to waste. “Tene” creates chargers from plastic waste, and “Plastic Watcher” creates raincoats, various accessories, bags, and umbrellas.
“First of all, thank you for inviting me. It is a great responsibility for me to speak to young people. I like that the new generation is a very smart and agile generation. It is welcome that you are thinking about planetary health issues. I wish you to implement more and more environmentally-oriented projects,” said Eka Asatiani.
The implementation of the student project will continue with a cleaning campaign, in which, along with the participants, partner organizations will also be involved. Finally, it will be closed with a conference, which anyone who wishes will be able to attend. The participants will make presentations at the conference on the topics they have mastered during the three months of the project.
“The student project “WM3R - Waste Management” is three months long and covers almost all aspects of waste management. Along with general information, participants meet social enterprises and organizations working in the same field from different angles and learn about their experiences. We believe that this is very motivating and creates lasting relationships for sustainable development,” said the student Avtandil Samadalashvili, the head of the project.
